YCL

Program

During the season, participants attend weekly practice sessions where they are coached by climbing instructors. From January through the first weekend in March, climbing gyms throughout Northern California host competitions. The championship competition finishes the season off in early March. For the competition schedule, consult this website, or contact your YCL team coach.

At competitions, competitors are broken into the following categories:

Boys & Girls: 7-9, 10-12, 13-14, and 15+

Climbers compete in two categories: degree of difficulty and speed.  Degree of difficulty is comprised of 3 top rope problems and 2 boulder problems.  The top rope problems are judged on how high you can climb within four minutes. As for the boulder problems, you have up to three tries within four minutes to tackle each problem. The speed climb is rated on your fastest time and you have two opportunities.

Individuals are awarded points for each route. After their group has climbed, scores are tallied and they receive ribbons for first through sixth place.  Individual scores are totaled to determine the winning team.
